Diamond Head Crater

We got to Diamond Head parking at 753. It was interesting driving through the one-lane tunnel to get into the Crater area. The entry gate didn't make a big deal we were 7 minutes early. The hike up Diamond Head was fantastic. The early part was paved nicely and then eventually it changes into a nice switching backing trail. It was mostly slabby rocks and firm trail the whole way, very sustainable for the large crowds. Railings were on the sides of the trail for much of it. Near the top there was a long staircase and then a walking tunnel we went through. At the top of the tunnel there was a trail option. Another steep staircase which would lead into the bunkers or a more gradual ascending trail to the summit area. We made it to the summit after a 35 minute Ascent and that includes the 4 minutes we waited for Anya at the bottom for bathroom. On the hike I only carried my collapsible pack with a water bottle in it. Anya and Ben both did great. I wasn't with Ben on the Ascent, he was with Luke and Seth and DAvid's group. I hiked with Anya, Mom and Dad. Anya had only a moment where she thought she was tired otherwise she pushed on well. I hear from Luke Ben got carried in one spot and that was it. The summit was incredibly crowded and hard to move about. The views were fantastic though. We took pictures with the classic Waikiki view. On the descent Luke and Seth went with David through the bunker section and met up with some of Holly and Jodi's group who were ascending. I took the Littles with Mom and Dad on the standard route. The Littles moved so well and grew in comfort on the rocky trail during the descent. It was fun to watch.

Ben was quite uninterested in getting his picture.

This part of the Crater floor had an uncanny
resemblance to the African savanna.
